The vast Jain temple complex at Palitana, in Gujarat, is situated on the upper levels of a mountain, and comprises more than 836 sanctuaries and shrines. The construction of this complex was begun in the 11th century, but it had to be totally reconstructed in the 16th and 17th centuries after the entire city was destroyed by Muslim invaders. The architectural forms here conform to the general outlines of the Nagara style, and are similar to those in other Jain temples at Mount Abu and Nagda.
